Publicly known as Mad Cow and othertimes referred to as Amanda Cox, and some other things that are probably best not repeated as they may very well surpass even the lax standards of this site, I am the mum to three boys, wife to a chef, an entrepreneur, blogger, writer, author, speaker, TV presenter, domestic godless, great friend, snaughler, and coffee lover.
I am an advocate for Mental Health, the health, wellbeing and happiness of families, and I do lots of good stuff around obesity, nutrition, and physical activity (for the health, wellbeing and happiness of families).
My life before kids included going out for dinner at 8.30pm, wearing lycra and yelling at people a lot in her role as a personal trainer and “group exercise leader” when it was still called aerobics, and helping people organise their weddings.
I finished up my role as manager of a corporate gym to give birth and commence a uni degree in Health Promotion, majoring in Family, Society, and Health. During this time I dabbled in a bout of severe post-natal depression, complete with suicidal idealolgy, and had a second baby, securing a four-week extension on my next-due assignment.
Reading just about every parenting book available at the time, and embarking on a mission to be the Best Mother In The World, I came to the conclusion that this very concept is not only not acheivable, it’s also not real. It is a myth. Rather than wallow in the black pit of despair, I started up reality parenting website Real Mums, and created a safe haven for all Australian mums: The Bad Mother’s Club. Then I had another baby…
I’ve also done lots of stuff like appeared on telly, and been quoted in the media. Mostly on parenting related topics, because I tend to have a somewhat obscure view compared to most of the rest of society. I’ve been a Live Positively Ambassador for a revoltingly large, global coporation, appeared in a TV commercial, worked as co-producer for Room To Grow, chaired of the board of a not for profit charity, contributed entire chapters to a couple of books, and done some writing for some massively huge projects for some massively huge companies.
Diary of a Mad Cow is the name of my personal blog, which I have used – and still do – to remind myself to see the funny side of life with three boys, and to prevent me from the slippery slide into depression. Again.
Although never really my conscious intention, Diary has also served to show other people they’re not alone in all the fun that is parenting, how to look at things from entirely different perspectives, and to laugh at their own misfortunes … or, at the very least, the misfortunes of others, which is always way more funny.
Thus, my motto: Laugh, cry, relate …
