I don’t generally focus much on mums who run their own business from home, because there are about a billionty websites out there that do this sort of thing already, and I don’t want to add to the mix of confusion.
I prefer to deal with the reality that encompasses ALL of your life, including, but not limited to, running a business from home. I have quite a bit of experience with this, given I do it daily.
I’m also guessing you’ve just looked at your vast list, that appears to have grown tentacles and they are working their way towards you, threatening to drag you under and smother you with all their tentacled list-y-ness.
The “Send Christmas cards to clients and customers” is in amongst it all, and, well, dammit! You’ve not done it and all the business gurus and experts and advisers tell you to do it, because it’s how you keep customers coming back, and it’s all about engagement and ifyoudon’tsendcardsyou’llbeamiserablefailure!
Yeah … I get it.
Here’s something I did learn in all my years.
Firstly – whilst this is good advice and there is plenty to gain from sending cards to your clients and customers, it is stock standard advice that is given to everyone.
Which means … can you guess?
Yup, everyone is sending cards at the same time, and clients and customers are being overwhelmed with greetings of the season. Often they’re not even hand written or personalised, but bulk ordered with the same generic message to everyone.
So. Many. Cards.
So it stands to reason that yours is likely to get lost in amongst it all, right?
And by the time you’ve stressed yourself the hell out, staying up to stupid o’clock to get them done, grumbling and yelling at your kids all the next day due to lack of sleep and fatigue and overwhelm and stress and needing to get all your other stuff sorted, it’s probably not even worth it.
You can do that, or you can go with this other brilliant gem of a method (which is really my excuse for not being terribly organised at the actual time, and just doing things a little later than everyone else – but it WORKS! Brilliantly, too, I might add!)
Get in before your competitors in the New Year!
Send a card telling them to have a great year – well after everyone else has – or go one better and get something that will grab their attention and have them remembering you.
Because you will be the only one to stand out and the only one to communicate with them like this at the beginning of the year. NOT a token “I have to do this” but a genuine “I’m really looking forward to working with you this year”.
Depending on your business and your usual customers, you can make something small yourself and send it off.
That works amazingly if you’re a crafty sort of business.
If not, get your logo on some gear with a promotional company like Fresh Promotions – send a handful of stress balls, or something useful, like USB flash drives, or something fun (not pens or ‘green bags’ – they’re SO overdone!) and send them off post-Christmas rush.
So unexpected will an after-Christmas gift be that they’ll be all excited and delighted and feeling very special.
You did that!
You can kill yourself now, doing the same as everyone else, or do something new, exciting and fresh that will have your clients and customers remember you.
S’up to you …
